Despite eShop updates so far this year bringing us little new 3DS-exclusive content – outside of Japan, that is – there is one surprise which caught our eye since Nintendo’s content hub was last updated, and it’s actually pretty exciting.
When viewing game details, we were always puzzled as to why the three screenshots you could view for each title were displayed in 2D only, regardless of the game in question. Luckily Nintendo seem to have fixed the issue, with screenshots now showing up in beautiful 3D – see our eShop photo below, with its parallax barrier shifting glory.
It’s a treat for those of us who wonder how potent the 3D effect is in games we browse on the service, and it seems older titles have had their screenshots updated for 3D viewing. One such game is Mario Kart 7, where new 3D screenshots (showing different tracks) replace the flat, 2D ones of old.
Unfortunately this treatment hasn’t seeped over to older releases. Mario Kart 7 is the oldest release we found with 3D screenshots.
Of course, it’d be nice if this attention to detail swept over to the game trailers which pepper our online shop, but luckily the latest two 3DS game card additions – F1 2011 and Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy – both host 3D trailers.
This neat addition is one in a long list of improvements Nintendo’s online shop has seen since it launched back in June, and since then it’s matured significantly, offering content that finally does the racks system justice. Let’s hope those remaining niggles – the ability for publishers to adjust pricing of their software and the massive content gap between Europe/North America and Japan to name just two – are sorted in the near future.
At least Nintendo have announced plans to put eShop on the web for sharing through the likes of Twitter and Facebook, which is certainly a step in the right direction in an era where coverage of your content is far more important following the growth of several competing online digital distribution platforms. Now bring us those demos which Japan have been enjoying!
