In somewhat unexpected fashion, the good news regarding Tales Of The Abyss 3D continues! Following the pleasant confirmation of a US release for Namco Bandai’s 3DS port of PS2 RPG Tales of the Abyss, we’ve just received news that an EU version – something we here at 3DS Tribe have been clambering around, speculating and wishing for – has been confirmed by Namco Bandai. This has us prancing around in joy, Monster Hunter-style. Not literally, of course.
The news breaks from fine videogames publication NGamer magazine – our fresh copy of issue 62, to be exact, where Tales of the Abyss 3DS is listed for a Spring 2012 release in the magazine’s “Heroes Of 3DS” preview feature for upcoming 3DS titles. Namco have an upcoming conference in two weeks, in which case we’ll likely hear about this EU release date alongside a solid date for North America.
NGamer magazine have had history for being dead right with rumours such as this. For example, they were the first worldwide source to break the news that Twilight Princess would be making the leap to Wii (known as Revolution back then) to eventually see a GameCube/Wii release in late 2006, back when the magazine was named NGC Magazine.
It’s also confirmed that Namco Bandai have relayed this news directly to NGamer’s staff (presumably reviews editor Matthew Castle), so we can rest easy for now that the game’s reaching European (and hopefully Australian) shores.

If StreetPass Quest turns out to be that launch window "RPG" president of Nintendo Europe was talking about at Amsterdam, we'll be Very Angry.
Pleasing news, then. 3DS is starved of RPGs at the moment – especially outside of Japan – despite Satoru Shibata, head of Nintendo of Europe, promising something for fans of the RPG genre to land on 3DS in its launch window back in January. We hope he wasn’t referring to StreetPass Quest…
Having run two previous features stating the likelihood of a European release for Tales of the Abyss 3DS, the evidence for one was indeed looking promising, even if the game never landed in the region on PS2, despite it following Nintendo’s localisation and publishing for the GameCube version of Tales of Symphonia in Europe back in late 2004. Check out that link at that first sentence of this paragraph for a recap on why we were so optimistic that we’ll see this game land on European shores.
One problem with all of this though: Spring 2012 is quite a way away. Why the long wait? The game’s already in English, for example, but we’re hoping that Namco must be translating it into other European languages to justify it. Otherwise we’ll be Very Angry.
A Japanese release is slated for this summer (June 2011), but we won’t be holding off using our line that is “curse that region lock” until we know the US date for the game, as it’s currently unconfirmed. We hope European gamers – including ourselves – won’t be punished with an overly long wait for this game if, say, it it slated for a 2011 release in America.
Case in point: Tales of Symphonia: Dawn Of The New World released almost a year after America in Europe, and while it is one of the most disappointing games in the ‘Tales of’ series, this is the sort of waiting torture we don’t want to see Namco Bandai inflicting on European gamers. Especially if the US release is slated for 2011, which won’t help at all if European gamers are left waiting even longer for a game they should have received on PS2.
However, 3DS’s region lock should keep gamers from importing the title, which is what likely led to low sales of Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations in Europe, which landed in the region a year or so later than it did in North America…
Brilliant news, then, even if the wait could be longer than we were expecting. We couldn’t be happier – unless Ghostlight announce that they’re publishing Devil Suvivor Overclocked here, that is. Catch up on the recent news on Tales of The Abyss 3DS with the announcement of the game heading overseas and a scattering of brand new screenshots and artwork coupled with the game’s promotional video here.
A further thank you to Andriasang for the screenshots here.
