Did you know that in 2015, 2.8 million people were hospitalized due to injuries? Not only can this be devastating to your health, but also your finances.
So, if you’ve been in an accident, then it might be a good idea to hire a personal injury lawyer. Here are 5 tips you should know when hiring a lawyer.
Choose Specialized Lawyers
Yes, you should pick a personal injury lawyer to represent you in your case. But did you know that these attorneys also have specializations?
For example, some specialize in car crash cases while others specialize in auto accidents. Other niches include medical malpractice and slip and falls.
So, as you can see, it’s best to do your research and go with specialized lawyers so you can increase your chances of winning in court, as these attorneys will have extensive experience in handling cases like yours.
Understand Their Fees
Different personal injury lawyers will have various fee structures. You want to make sure you understand how each lawyer’s works before making a commitment.
This might mean you have to ask a few questions. For example, you should find out if they charge an hourly or flat rate. Plus, inquire whether you need to pay the fees upfront or if you can get on a payment plan if money is tight.
Taking some extra time to completely understand lawyer fees can be worth it, especially since you can avoid a potentially unpleasant financial surprise in the future.
Check Their Reviews
Checking reviews from previous clients is always a good idea. While a personal injury attorney needs to be fantastic at what they do, they should treat their clients well too.
You want to choose an attorney that previous clients say treated them kindly, compassionately, and patiently. It’s already distressing enough to go through your injury; you don’t need unnecessary stress on top of that.
Make Sure They Have a Clean Track Record
Before you hire a personal injury lawyer, you need to double-check that they don’t have a discipline history.
Go to your state’s bar website and put in the lawyer’s name. Make sure you avoid hiring anyone with a discipline history, as that’s just asking for trouble.
Always Go for an Initial Consultation
In most cases, personal injury lawyers will offer free consultations. Take full advantage of that, whether it’s by phone or in person.
Make sure you prepare a list of questions to ask. Treat the consultation like an interview where you not only gather information, but also see how the attorney and his staff members treat their clients.
You want to make sure you’re choosing a law firm that you’re 100% comfortable with, so never skip the initial consultation!
